Eddie Hearn has urged boxing fans to “let the information get out” before making “their own decisions” about the postponement of Conor Benn v Chris Eubank Jr.
The highly anticipated fight was canceled on Thursday after Benn failed a drug test, shocking the boxing world just two days before the catchweight fight.
However, Hearn has claimed that the fight could still have gone on if the parties involved had wanted it, and denied going to court after the news broke.
Eddie Hearn has urged fans to wait for information on Benn v Eubank postponement
The match was postponed after Sportsmail revealed on Thursday that Benn (r) had failed a drug test
“At that point (after the board has called off the fight) we are faced with a situation where the board’s decision can be legally challenged and we will win based on precedent, based on the rules of the board, or we have a decision to another committee, which is easiest,” Hearn said.
“We could have continued this fight with 3-4 committees willing to organize this fight. We did not appear in court, as I read somewhere.
“We spoke to our lawyers, our lawyers told us that we believe you will win an arbitration to continue this fight and in the end it was decided not to. The battle was drawn by us, the parties. It was the right decision in my opinion.’
Benn’s failed test led to Saturday’s fight at the O2 Arena, with Chris Eubank Jr being cancelled
Hearn added that the promotion paid for additional testing before the match, before urging frustrated fans to wait for any information about the events leading up to the postponement before jumping to conclusions.
“He (Benn) has a very difficult time ahead,” Hearn said.
“Ultimately, people can make their own decisions and all that. I feel that because I’ve been in situations here before, you need to let the information come out.
Matchroom confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the fight had been officially ‘postponed’
“We have also paid for additional testing for this match as part of the promotion and at the request of the fighters.
“The fighters asked with us, as we do for all major championship fights, and it was very expensive, for additional testing to be done.”
“Before that article appeared in the Daily Mail, we already knew that the board had said that we are not prepared to penalize this fight because we don’t think it is in the best interest of boxing.”
