A mother who stomped on a woman’s head as she lay in the street outside a pub has been jailed after twice defying court orders to do 180 hours of unpaid work.

Charlotte Unwin, 23, kicked her victim in the face and stamped on her head during the horrific attack outside the Blackamoor pub in Selby, North Yorkshire, in March 2022.

A judge initially took an ‘exceptional course’ by imposing a suspended sentence on the mother of a child on the condition that she carry out unpaid work in the community.

But Unwin failed to show up 53 times and was twice brought before Judge Simon Hickey at York Crown Court.

On the second occasion his patience finally ran out and Unwin was jailed for four months.

Judge Hickey told her: “I view your apology with some skepticism. In my opinion, the imposition of an immediate custodial sentence is not unjust.

“People who stomp other people, especially young women, defenseless to the ground usually go to prison.”

He had initially taken an ‘exceptional course’ by suspending a six-month prison sentence for 18 months on condition she completed 15 days of rehabilitation activities and 180 hours of unpaid work.

But the court heard she had stopped co-operating with the probation service and had turned up for less than half of her appointments.

In total, she had attended only 35 of the 82 appointments.

She had given an acceptable explanation for some of the missed appointments, but for 19 of them she had no excuse at all.

The judge jailed her for four months out of six, with two months deducted because she had completed part of his order.

The court heard how the victim fell on her back while holding her mobile phone outside the Finkle Street pub at around 2am in March 2022.

Unwin then went up to her and kicked her in the face and kicked her in the head.

Police showed Unwin footage of the incident when they interviewed her, but she did not respond.

Unwin, from Selby, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing actual bodily harm to the woman and failing to comply with unpaid work appointments in December and January, marking the second time she had breached the order.

Brooke Morrison, from the Probation Service, said at a hearing in September 2023 that Unwin had been given an additional five days of rehabilitation activity for breaching suspended sentence conditions.

For Unwin, Graham Parkin said she stopped attending after the unwanted actions of a man who intimidated her into attending unpaid work and trial dates.

But the judge said she had not told the probation service about this man.

Mr Parkin said Unwin had problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, because of things she had experienced in the past and that childhood issues had sometimes led to “extreme behaviour”.

“She never had a life,” he said, adding that Unwin now started talking to people who could help her with her problems and was sorting out housing and family issues.

He said she had not offended police or been in trouble since the incident outside the Blackamoor pub.
