Don’t know yet which game to put on the table this weekend? Leave a comment below for advice
One of the best parts of our job at Polygon is recommending great new games to play. Whether it’s indie games, fun games, board games, or just the best of the year, we always try to introduce readers to new and exciting choices. Lists are a great way to share a variety of great tabletop games in a short time. But sometimes it’s nice to do something more personal.
That’s why we have a regular open thread dedicated to helping you, our dear readers, find the perfect board game, card game, or tabletop role-playing game to play right now. Want to start a one-month campaign with a close group of friends? We have options, that’s for sure. Are you hoping for something short and sweet to kick off a longer evening of gaming? We have something that also meets that need.
From 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM EDT, I’ll be answering your questions and making requests about what you should play in the comments section below. We previously programmed this as a weekly movie column, but we’ll be moving that version to a monthly schedule, with more non-movie recommendation threads coming your way week after week, including video games, comics, TV, and now tabletop games.
I should add that this is also a great place for some sharing you played, if you want to talk about that with your fellow Polygon readers! Participation is very welcome, even without questions.
A little about me, your curator for this round: I’m Charlie Hall, editor-in-chief of Polygon and the first and only tabletop editor at a major media publication here in the United States. I’ve been writing about board games, TCGs, and TTRPGs since before I even worked here – for over twelve years now. I certainly haven’t played everything, but I’m looking for the latest and greatest in pretty much every category – from solid roll-and-writes to dark and stormy solo journaling games.
What am I playing now? Well, Dungeons & Dragons night is Tuesday here for my group in Northern Illinois, and we’ve been playing together every week for almost a decade now. But that is not everything! I just started a campaign of Arcs: collapse and conflict in the void, the latest from Leder Games due out later this year. I also did a lot of reps of Life in Reterra, the latest from Diana Jones Award-winning designer Eric M. Lang. In between painting more of my beloved Dark Angels Space Marines after work, I even managed to squeeze in a few rounds Disney Lorcana‘s latest set of cards with the kids.
Now it’s time to turn it around on you. Which table game would you like to play this weekend? Maybe you know what you’re playing and want to share how much fun that game is! Are you painting something that you want to show off? Leave a comment or request below and I’ll get to it as soon as possible. Details help, of course. Let me know about the other players at the table and what they like, the last few games you all enjoyed playing together or separately, and any other relevant information you’d like to share.
Here are two examples of good searches from last week’s comic issue:
