American boxing legend Teddy Atlas believes Australian lightweight George Kambosos will do better with the underdog tag – as the former world champion prepares to take out star Devin Haney, who could end his career.
The 66-year-old trainer and commentator says Kambosos Jr was purely outclassed in his title fight against Haney in Melbourne, but will be learning for his second crack on October 16.
‘The Dream’ Haney remains the undefeated lightweight champion of the world after 28 professional fights, but showed weaknesses in his triumph at the Rod Laver Arena.

Atlas says Haney’s win under and agreement to return to Australia has shown his loyalty as a fighter, but he knows he will have to work on certain technical flaws to keep his title.
‘The thing that scares me is him [Haney] sometimes keeps his head in the air a bit,” Atlas said in his podcast The fight with Teddy Atlas.
“Sometimes you can time him out. He is ahead of Kambosos. I like Kambosos very much. He is a real fighter.
“Now no one expects me to win again.” You always know he’s good as an underdog. He fights well in that position. Some people fight better as underdogs. They always had to overcome to make it.
Kambosos is a bit behind him when it comes to skill level, skill level and maybe some of the pure skill areas.

“Kambosos, his thing is timing. Timing can beat speed. He used timing against Teofimo Lopez, who is a big puncher, and he dropped Teofimo for timing him. He timed it and found he could hit it with the right hand.”
Atlas trained 18 world champions, including former heavyweight star Mike Tyson.
The ESPN commentator believes Kambosos is a smart boxer and will try to disrupt Haney’s rhythm with timing.

Haney has been called the fighter of the generation, with more speed and strategy than many in his division.
The 23-year-old gave Kambosos his first loss of his career after 20 games, including victories over American Teofimo Lopez and Welsh tough Lee Selby.
If Kambosos is going to lose, there are concerns that his career will come to a halt, with Atlas believing his passion for the sport has faded due to his visible loss to Haney.
