Sundress season is here, but it has sparked a major debate on social media about what actually makes a flirty frock an official summer dress.
On TikTok, men debate what exactly a sundress is, and women weigh in on what they think of the craze.
One content creator remembered “the time my ex said he liked sundresses, so I wore one, but he meant a bodycon maxi dress.”
“I cried in shame,” she captioned the viral post.
However, commenters were quick to question the definition of the cheeky dress, with one asking: ‘Why don’t they know what a sundress is?’

Commenters were quick to explain how they defined the summer ensemble.
‘A summer dress is usually a knee-length or tea-length dress that is usually not always sleeveless. It’s summery with bright colors or even flowers,” one commenter explains.
One woman said it was a “dress you would wear to frolic in a meadow of flowers,” while another described the style as “a long flowy dress with those little puff sleeves” in a floral print.
Many simply wondered why so many men on social media were calling on women to don summer dresses this summer, when they actually didn’t know what silhouette they were describing.
“I SAID GUYS DON’T KNOW WHAT A SUNSHADE IS, they’re like oh girls in summer dresses are so hot, it’s like we’re not on the same page,” one person said.
Content creator Willie Prince-Mata, who makes videos as Prxnce and is based in Phoenix, Arizona, where TikTok boldly asked, “Where are all the summer dresses?!”
The creator said, “All I see you women wearing are these damn wrestling singlets,” referring to the athleisure onesies popular with celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, and joked that he doesn’t know if he’s “at the mall or WWE Friday Night Smackdown.”
“It’s sundress season, baby, come on, men are waiting, bring them out!” exclaimed the creator – and many commentators disagreed that he decided what women should wear.

Commenters were quick to explain how they defined the summer ensemble — ranging from puffed sleeves to florals as a prerequisite
“I took out a summer dress… heard this… slowly put the summer dress back in the closet… it’s an oversized T-shirt!” one woman joked.
“You don’t have to ask permission to wear a sundress king…live your best life baby,” another suggested.
Austin, located in Texas Randy Trembacki30, from Washed media showed off his personal definition of a sundress in a now-viral TikTok.
“This is a summer dress, this is what we’re thinking about – when I googled this was the first thing that came up,” Randy announced, showing off a short red mini dress from Shein with bows on the straps and a tight body.
He then showed a similar style in white with blue flowers and clarified that a sundress has a top that resembles a corset, a flowing skirt that reaches above the knees and is a bright color with a floral print.
He explained that a tight dress cannot be a sundress, whether it is a bodycon or a tennis dress.
Although examples vary, the answer seems to be a flowy dress with a flirty top in a bright color or cheerful pattern.
According to the Florida-based designer Anthony‘Sundresses are typically made from lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton, rayon and linen.’
‘They are usually sleeveless or have thin straps, designed for warm, humid weather. Sundresses can have different hemlines, from mini to full length. However, midi to maxi length is the most common,” the website says.
