Alistair Thomson: Fears grow for experienced hiker last seen more than a WEEK ago as he trekked through remote bushland

Fears are growing for an experienced bushwalker who was last heard from more than a week ago as he trekked through remote Central Australia.

Alistair Thomson, 63, was traveling alone on the Larapinta Trail towards Alice Springs from about 240 kilometers west of the city, NT police said.

The hiker, from Victoria, had plenty of food and water with him when he last contacted friends and family via text message on May 21.

He intended to reach Hugh Gorge on May 22, but has not been heard from since and has not returned to his hotel.

Police, the Larapinta Trail Trek Support Team and local rangers are now searching for Mr Thomson.

He is 6 feet tall, white, and has light brown hair that is turning gray. He wore a blue wide-brimmed hat.
