A father whose left arm was nearly severed from his shoulder after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing was only yards from his four-year-old son.

Father-of-three Robbie Peck, 38, was assaulted on Friday while spearfishing off the coast in Port Hedland in Western Australia.

It turned out that his brother-in-law had pulled him back onto the fishing boat, where Mr. Peck’s young son was also aboard.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Flying Doctor Service said he suffered multiple injuries and his left arm was “nearly chopped off.”

Paramedics cared for him after he was taken back to shore by boat at 11:30 am, where he was then rushed to Hedland Health Campus under priority one conditions.

Mr Peck was later flown to Perth Royal Hospital in stable condition for surgery.

Mr. Peck’s wife, Emily, remembered the moment she received the news about her husband.

“(It was) just that sinking feeling in your stomach and I swear all the blood just drained from my face,” she said. 7News.

“It’s not a phone call you ever want to get… You immediately expect the worst when you hear a shark attack,” added Mrs. Peck.

In a twist on what was already a tragic incident, this was actually Mr. Peck’s last outing on the boat – with the couple making plans to sell it.

Mrs. Peck’s son said ‘his father is so brave’.

“I think the guys on the boat kept him pretty sheltered from all the trauma,” Ms. Peck added.

The WA Fisheries Department is working with local authorities and urging people to take extra precautions in the Port Hedland area.
