Democrats Panic About Joe Biden’s Chances in 2024 Election Against Trump: Inside the Outright Panic of the President’s Party
Democrats feel Joe Biden could lose the November election to Donald Trump. They’re concerned about polls showing him falling behind in key states and the fact that none of Trump’s legal troubles appear to be making a dent in his numbers.
“This isn’t, ‘Oh my God, Mitt Romney could be president.’ It’s ‘Oh my God, democracy might end,'” a Democratic aide close to the White House told me Politics.
Biden’s stubbornly poor polling and the stakes of the election are “causing the freakout,” the person said.
Morning Consult polls show Trump ahead of Biden in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The two are bonded in Nevada. Biden has a narrow lead in Michigan.
Biden’s campaign is counting on the “blue wall” of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan to grant them a second term in the White House.

But it’s not just the polls.
Voters continue to question Biden’s age ability to handle the stress of his job. He is the oldest person ever elected president and if he wins a second term, he would be 86 when this one is over.
There is also voter dissatisfaction with the economy and high inflation, progressives’ anger over the war in Gaza, and concerns that independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could gather enough votes to swing the election to Trump.
At many of his events, Biden is greeted by protesters dissatisfied with the situation in the Middle East and his staunch support for Israel.
And Gallup notes that Biden’s average approval rating is 38.7% during his recently completed 13th quarter as president — the lowest of any president since Dwight Eisenhower.
While Biden still leads among Black voters, he has lost nearly 20% of his support since the last election.
Trump, meanwhile, is venturing into traditionally blue areas like the Bronx in New York to try to win over some of these disenfranchised voters.
An advisor to Democratic Party donors showed this Politics their running list of reasons why the Biden campaign could lose, including the above reasons and many others, including border security and the unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Donors ask me every hour what I think,” the advisor said, calling it “so much easier to show it to them, so while they’re reading it, I can pour them a drink.”
The advisor added, “The list of why we ‘can’ win is so small that I don’t even need to keep track of the list on my phone.”

The Biden campaign touts their own reasons for the victory, including their high fundraising totals — the president has $155 million in his campaign account — and their heavy investments in state offices in critical battlegrounds.
“Trump’s photo ops and PR stunts may get under the skin of some very serious DC people as persuasive campaigns, but they will do nothing to win over the voters who will decide this election,” Biden campaign spokesman said Kevin Munoz.
Time remains on the side of both candidates.
With about six months to go, most voters won’t really start paying attention to the elections until the fall.
But Democrats are also concerned that Biden is not using a message that will appeal to voters.
Biden has emphasized that the race is about the future of democracy. He has condemned Trump for the events of January 6.
And in an effort to mobilize women voters, the president is blaming Trump for chipping away at abortion rights.
Trump, meanwhile, is building his border wall and angering voters over what he calls a “witch hunt” against him.
“There’s still a path to win this, but they don’t look like a campaign that’s going down that path now,” said Pete Giangreco, a longtime Democratic strategist.
“If the frame of this race is, ‘Which was better, the 3.5 years under Biden or four years under Trump,’ we’ll lose that every day of the week and twice on Sundays.”
