Tottenham have confirmed they have signed Timo Werner on a new one-year loan deal.

The original January loan deal for the Red Bull Leipzig forward included an option to buy for around £15 million, although the new deal is believed to cost just £8.5 million.

Ange Postecoglou is delighted with the contribution of 28-year-old Werner and the deal represents good business for Tottenham as they look to make an early impression on the market.

The German forward joined Postecoglou’s side in January and scored two goals in 13 games on his return to the Premier League.

Werner was keen to stay at the club and rediscover his form after struggling in recent years.

He went through a difficult time during his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge, failing to show the form that earned him a £53 million move to the Blues.

Werner returned to RB Leipzig in 2022, where he scored 11 goals in 35 Bundesliga appearances before joining Tottenham last winter.

His experience and versatility are a bonus for Tottenham as he can operate on the wings or as a striker.

Speaking about the possibility of Werner staying, Postecoglou said earlier this month: ‘We have Timo on loan until the end of the season and he is part of that strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and whether we can do that.

‘Are there any more gaps and where does Timo fit in that strategy? So we made a plan, and it was regardless. I think he has been very good for us.

‘We fell short in large areas. Him coming in was very helpful for us and I think he has made an impact, but in order to make those final decisions I first need some clarity on what we have here.”
