Keanu Reeves drops out of Devil In The White City series produced by Leonardo DiCaprio

Producers for the upcoming limited series, Devil In The White City, are once again looking for a new protagonist.

Deadline reports that Keanu Reeves, who was announced to be working on the Hulu production in August, will no longer star in the series adaptation.

So far, there is no official word on what prompted his departure from the drama being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese.

Based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book of the same name, Devil In The White City tells the true story of ‘Daniel H. Burnham, a discerning but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

The storyline also revolves around Dr. HH Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the infamous ‘Murder Castle’ built in the shadow of the Fair.

The series would have been Reeves’ first major American television role in his illustrious career.

On board: Leonardo DiCaprio, who bought the rights to the book version of Devil In The White City, will serve as one of the executive producers of the Hulu series; seen in December 2021

Despite the setback, the eight-episode series is still targeting a 2024 launch, with production not expected to begin until next year.

The project has been in various stages of development since DiCaprio bought the film rights to the book in 2010 and then pitched it as a feature film at Paramount with Scorsese directing.

But in 2019, Hulu announced a change of direction and that it was now being developed as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese as executive producers.

The Oscar-winning actor is not expected to star in the show.

A search for Reeves’ replacement has already begun.

Deadline was one of the publications to report that Warner Bros. brought the DC character to life with Reeves set to return as John Constantine some 17 years after the original premiered.

At this point, it’s unknown if any of the original’s co-stars, including Rachel Weisz and Shia LaBeouf, will reprise their roles.

It became a box office hit, grossing over $230 million worldwide on a budget of $70-100 million.

The neo-noir action thriller, starring Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, Clancy Brown, Scott Adkins and Hiroyuki Sanada, will premiere in theaters on March 24, 2023.
