If you’ve been using the basic level of Google Workspace for years, there’s good news: you get extra storage for free
In a rare win for long-time Google users with business accounts, individuals with decade-old G Suite accounts (rebranded as Google Workspace since 2020) have received additional cloud storage for free.
Despite Google’s (and frankly everyone’s, to be honest) preference to steer customers away from free and freemium plans to more lucrative recurring plans, holders of a legacy G Suite account can not only keep their existing free G Suite account, but get they also boost storage for free.
While many customers have already moved to more modern Workspace offerings with combined storage, resistant customers who chose to keep their free G Suite (“personal use”) subscriptions were recently notified of the change via email.
G Suite storage improvement
In an email to G Suite customers who paid for additional storage – which they could do through a separate subscription until June 2022 – Google warned that these subscriptions were now being canceled and refunds were being issued.
However, at the end of the email, the company added: “While the subscription has been canceled, your storage limit has not changed and no action is required from you.”
A Google spokesperson has now confirmed this (via The edge): “Customers who received this notification will keep their allocated storage space and can continue to use their existing account.”
The spokesperson also confirmed that those who are still paying for user-managed storage through Google Play, despite having migrated to newer Workspace plans, would be similarly affected.
It is unclear whether legacy G Suite account holders who did not pay for additional storage have received upgrades and whether the free storage will match the amount previously paid for or whether a fixed allocation has been applied by default.
Ny Breaking asked Google to confirm this data, but the company did not immediately respond.
