Lando Norris ‘CAN challenge me for the world title’, Max Verstappen claims… as the Red Bull star casts doubt on his own chances in Monaco this weekend
- Max Verstappen has won five of the seven races in the 2024 F1 season so far
- Lando Norris won his very first race earlier this month at the Miami Grand Prix
- Verstappen claimed that the Brit can challenge him for the world title this year
Max Verstappen believes Lando Norris can challenge him for the world championship, possibly starting with victory in Monaco this weekend.
There is talk of a moribund title battle, with Norris winning in Miami for McLaren at the beginning of this month and harassing Verstappen all the way to the checkered flag in Imola last week. He finished less than a second behind the defending champion in a brilliant late battle.
Although he is 60 points behind Verstappen, Norris still has 17 races to make up for the deficit. “Lando is really in the mix,” said the Dutchman.
‘He is a lot of points behind, but if they suddenly start winning, that can quickly change.
“It’s closed and that makes it very important to be at our best. Imola started badly and we managed to turn the tide, but I don’t want to experience a weekend like that again.’

Verstappen also doubted his own chances this weekend during the Monaco Grand Prix
Verstappen has won twice on the principality’s famously tight streets, but he fears the unique demands of the track will not play to the strengths of his Red Bull machine.
“It’s a different track and not our best because our car struggles to get off the curb and at low speed,” he added.
“We have worked on that and improved it, but it will not be an easy weekend.”
