Tragedy as young woman, 22, dies falling from cliff at popular tourist hiking spot

A young female hiker tragically fell 60 feet to her death on a popular hiking trail in Oregon during an outing with her friends.

Elisha Angelic Macias, 22, of Hillsboro, was hiking near the Oreonta Trail on Sunday when the fatal fall occurred.

Macias was on an excursion with friends in the so-called ‘Waterfall Corridor’ in the area west of Multnomah Falls when she became separated from the group.

Officers were called and when they arrived, another hiker was performing CPR on Macias.

However, she was pronounced dead at the scene by Cascade Locks Fire & EMS personnel around 4:35 p.m. – shortly after emergency responders arrived.

Search and rescue crews determined she fell 50 to 60 feet off a cliff west of the Horsetail Falls Trailhead.

“No one in the group saw her fall,” the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Search and rescue teams helped recover the hiker’s body and volunteers “responded by providing trauma-informed resources and care to all those affected,” according to a news release.

According to Macias’ social media, she worked as a teacher at Belmont Academy and was originally from the Bronx.

Last month, the 22-year-old vacationed in Las Vegas with her group of friends to celebrate a birthday.

Friends of Macias flocked to social media to share their heartbroken reactions.

“There are no words that can truly describe what is going on in my head, but Elisha, you were an amazing person through and through,” her close friend wrote. Instagram.

“You helped me in one of my darkest and lowest moments and I am so grateful that I was given the opportunity to love you and be loved by you,” he said – adding that he can’t believe this is true is.

‘You will always be in my thoughts and forever in my heart. I’m just glad our little angel is no longer alone in heaven. Rest in peace Elisha.’

“Rest in peace Elisha Macias You were literally an angel,” another friend Marisa Waldo wrote on Facebook. “Even your middle name is ‘angelic.’ You were such a special soul on this planet.”

‘My heart is broken and I am devastated. God took you too soon,” Brittney Hernandez said in a post.

Marcias’ tragic death is the second fatal accident in the popular hiking area this spring, according to the newspaper Statesman magazine.

On March 15, a 61-year-old woman was found dead at the bottom of a cliff near Horsetail Falls Trailhead after also hiking the Oneonta Trail.
