NBA legend Paul Pierce reveals he suffered gruesome finger injury after dropping 45-pound weight on it during a workout

NBA legend Paul Pierce has revealed how he suffered a horrific finger injury last week that landed him in hospital.

On Friday, the former Boston Celtics player shocked fans when he went to Instagram to share a photo of him lying in a hospital bed.

He also shared photos of a gruesome finger injury, showing severe cuts and blood on his hand.

But now he has revealed how it happened and provided some stark details about the incident during an appearance on Monday’s episode of ‘Undisputed’.

With his bandaged finger in a cast, Pierce said, “I was crushing him in the weight room and a plate fell on my hand.

“I was doing a plank with a 45 [pound plate]You know, no one can really do that except real gorillas in the weight room.

‘It slipped off, was smashed by hand, I had to have surgery. But I’m here bright and early Monday morning, ready… Finger smashed open, bone came out, I drove myself to the hospital, had surgery, went home and had a cup of coffee.

“That’s it… and I’m going to get back in the weight room and get right back to work.”

Pierce, a 10-time NBA All-Star who won a ring with the Boston Celtics in 2008, played 19 seasons in the NBA, averaging nearly 20 points, six rebounds and four rebounds.

The injury came at the end of a tumultuous week for Pierce, during which he was also accused of uttering racial slurs during the broadcast.

In an “Undisputed” segment about the Pacers’ 121-89 win over the Knicks, Pierce was surprised by the box score for New York’s Donte DiVincenzo.

Pierce appeared to say the N-word in clips of the incident and it prompted many to post on social media in surprise — as Pierce’s flub could be yet another setback for Fox’s struggling morning sports talk show.

It wasn’t the first time Pierce had gotten in trouble for his public actions while working in television.

He was previously fired by ESPN in April 2021 for going live on Instagram during a poker game.

During that livestream, he was surrounded by women in bikinis who were twerking and rubbing his shoulders. In the video, Pierce was also seen drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Three days later, he was fired by ESPN, ending a relationship that began in 2017.

Pierce started and ended his career as a Celtic. He spent his first 15 years with the team, winning the 2008 NBA title and being named to 10 All-Star teams.

Only John Havlicek played more season with the Celtics, who retired Pierce’s No. 36 jersey.

Pierce finished as the Celtics’ all-time leader in three-point field goals (1,823), free throws (6,434) and steals (1,583), and his 24,021 career points trail only Havlicek.

He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013, spent 2014-15 with Washington and played his final two seasons for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Pierce re-signed with Boston in 2017 so he could retire as a Celtic.

He was first nominated for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame with the Class of 2021.
