Urgent warning after canister containing toxic waste washes ashore on popular beach

A silver canister of toxic waste has washed up on a popular Queensland beach, prompting an urgent warning.

The bus was found while water police were conducting patrols at Curtis Island near Cape Capricorn in Gladstone on Wednesday.

The discovery prompted police to issue a statement warning people not to pick up buses while spending time on the beach.

“Do not attempt to move or open these buses,” the statement read.

‘The canister is described as being approximately 30cm long and 15cm in diameter, and contains a toxic chemical, which could be harmful if handled.

“It was subsequently removed.”

Anyone who sees a silver van or similar container should call triple zero.
