A Benedictine College graduate has posted her response to Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s controversial speech on TikTok, saying it was “fucking awful.”
Fresh from graduating, Susannah Leisegang gave a firsthand account of her participation in the crowd for Butker’s misogynistic commencement address, which took place last Saturday in Atchison, Kansas.
“Okay… Well, since I have about two hundred of you congratulating me and asking me what the hell I was thinking during the speech, I thought I’d respond… um, yeah it was terrible,” she said first. “Some of us have been handcuffed. Me and my roommate certainly did that. There was a standing ovation from everyone in the room. Except for myself, my roommate and about 10 to 15 other women.
‘You also have to remember that this was at a Catholic and conservative university. So a lot of guys were like, ‘F*** yeah.’ They were excited.
‘But it was terrible. Most of the women looked back and forth at each other asking, “What the hell is going on?” Did he just come here? to speak about politics and his views on women? That’s all you have for graduation, the commencement speech. Are you joking?”
Benedictine College graduate Susannah Leisegang gave her account of Harrison Butker’s speech on TikTok on Wednesday, describing the contrast in reaction between men and women
Butker faced backlash for telling some female graduates that they should be more excited about becoming stay-at-home wives than forging their own careers.
Leisegang, who has 1,406 followers on TikTok, added that she already has a job at a “national magazine company, doing layout and photography.” She entered the professional field with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.
“So yeah, I’m excited about what my career brings me…” said the Colorado-based influencer. “And no, I’m not a housewife…”
‘I’m also 21. Question mark. Getting married and having kids is not my ideal situation right now,” she then noted, adding that Butker’s speech was “absolutely awful,” before claiming that “graduation definitely felt a bit less special knowing that I had to go through that and be told I was nothing but a housewife.
“But thank you all for the congratulations. It means a lot. I cried a little when I read all the comments from you, but yes, I love you all.”
On May 11, Butker, 28, told Benedictine College graduates that women shouldn’t be in the workplace as he also called Pride Month a cardinal sin.
He also urged male students to “be unapologetic” about their masculinity and called out US President Joe Biden for being a pro-Catholic. Ironically, Harrison, who clearly adheres to conservative ideologies, was raised by an accomplished and decorated physicist.
The NFL has distanced itself from Butker’s views. He has been with the Chiefs since 2017
On Thursday, former California first lady Maria Shriver, who is also the ex-wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other celebrities criticized Butker for his comments.
The LA Chargers also took aim at the three-time Super Bowl champion when announcing their schedule for the 2024 NFL season.
Kansas City’s X account also weighed in on the kicker’s comments, as well as the NFL.
A viral petition demanding the Chiefs fire Butker has now collected 174,000 signatures.
