A Florida drone pilot caught a shocking near miss on camera as a shark came within two feet of completely unaware swimmers last week.

Pilot Robert Russ spotted the seven-foot shark while navigating the drone with his brother Thursday and began to curiously track it as it swam near the Daytona Beach boardwalk. 

Then, they noticed that the shark began to move closer and closer to two swimmers, who obliviously wave at the camera. 

What is believed to be a blacktip shark starts to head for the pair, but then glides away, the swimmers none the wiser as to the danger they may have been in.  

Russ told Fox35 that they weren’t the only ones: ‘It swam towards multiple people before realizing they were not food and moving on’.

He noted that there have been many shark attacks in the Daytona Beach area in 2022 and he was scared for his subjects.  

Russ added: ‘It was unnerving at moments to watch this since there are quite a few people bitten here, but confirms they are generally unintentional bites’.

Florida and New York have been among the states seeing an increase in shark attacks this year, with Florida leading the country in attacks and bites.  

A 13-year-old boy chomped in the face and a teenage girl among the victims in the Sunshine State just this summer. 

The state’s ‘shark bite capital of the world’ Volusia County has seen a half dozen attacks just this year.

Beach officials have said visitors should make sure to swim near a lifeguard and also advises to not swim alone. 

In New York, State Parks Regional Director George Gorman said that the enhanced shark patrols are expected to remain in place throughout the summer season.
