British foodie loses it when he sees what Australian McDonald’s coffee cups look like: ‘Since when?!’
A British man was amazed to see what McCafe coffee looks like in Australia.
His friend ordered the coffee with sugar and was surprised when the barista added the sweetener for him instead of giving him a sachet to add himself.
“I thought all McDonald’s coffee machines around the world would be pretty standardized until a friend posted a photo of her Australian cup,” the man wrote on Facebook.
“Since when did they add sugar for you instead of the little white packets?” What are the options at your local Maccies?’
In Australia, sugar is only added at the customer’s request, but it is an option.

Other customers shared their own theories, especially about hygiene and convenience.
“Most cafes are sugaring it, especially since Covid,” one Australian wrote.
“I think they add the sugar for you so those who pick up their coffee at the drive thru don’t have to put the sugar in while they’re driving,” said another.
Someone else said: ‘I’m Australian and yes they put sugar in it for you.’
Another claimed: ‘They don’t mix the sugar in though – you get a bunch of sugar at the bottom of the cup if you forget to mix it.’
“That’s because in Australia we have a cafe/espresso culture, and actually good coffee. McDonald’s coffee is considered very low quality in Australia… y’all don’t care about coffee so everyone just adheres to your insanely low standards,” wrote another.

However, others were distraught at the way the man referred to McDonald’s as ‘Maccies’ instead of ‘Maccas’.
‘Wtf is a Maccies? It’s Maccas, and Australian coffee is the best in the world, bar none, and Melbourne coffee is the best in Australia. Macca’s use baristas, no machine junk here!’ said one.
“Brits call them Maccies, Australians call them Maccas,” said another, another Brit said: “They are definitely Maccies, not Maccas.”
