Slovakia’s prime minister has been ‘shot and wounded and taken to hospital’, local reports claim.

Robert Fico was shot in Handlova after a meeting of the Slovak government, TASR news agency reported on Wednesday.

Shots were fired in front of the House of Culture and a witness told Reuters he saw a man being held by police.

A local reporter told the Slovak news site Dennisthat Fico had left the building to greet people who had gathered to catch a glimpse of him before “several shots were fired.”

Fico then reportedly fell to the ground.

The alleged attacker was arrested on the spot by police, who subsequently cordoned off the area and the House of Culture was evacuated.
