Fans were left baffled as to why Ederson was allowed to continue playing in Manchester City’s match against Tottenham on Tuesday night after appearing to suffer a head injury during a sickening clash with Cristian Romero.

The Brazilian goalkeeper dived to prevent Romero from making a cross with his foot, and as he recovered the ball, he appeared to slam his head into Romero’s hip.

Romero immediately raised concerns for the goalkeeper’s well-being as Ederson lay on his stomach on the ground before Man City’s medical team arrived on the pitch to provide treatment.

When he got back up, although he looked dizzy, he was remarkably allowed to play for a few more minutes before being substituted for Stefan Ortega.

One fan wrote about the incident: ‘If you take Ederson off because of the collision, you do it straight away, not after five minutes of play.’

Another added: “Why on earth didn’t they take out Ederson? He clearly needs to get rid of it.’

“Man City jokes aside, Ederson should have been taken out there. He’s probably out and can continue playing?’ One said, while another added: “There is no world where Ederson should stay there. Take him away.’

“I’m no doctor, but when you look at that challenge and the aftermath, how could it have taken so long to get Ederson off the field?”

Man City had taken a 1-0 lead in the match, thanks to Erling Haaland’s second-half strike.

Ederson was also unhappy at being substituted and was seen fuming as he left the pitch, before appearing to argue with Pep Guardiola on the touchline over the decision to be withdrawn.

The Spanish manager appeared to try to calm the 30-year-old down, with the Brazilian appearing to kick a water bottle as he walked back to the bench.

Gary Neville added that he too found the decision to let Ederson play ‘strange’.

Neville said: “He had every right to go for it. To protect the goalkeeper, but we’ll see. It won’t look good on replay, I’m sure, but I have to say, Oh, the one they called the doctors in for, they’re worried. To put it bluntly, it was a bit of a delayed response from the medical team.

‘Yes, due to Edison’s injury it is obviously not in the interest to show you the actual replay, but on the VAR screen that we can see it is a genuine attempt to get the ball, and while Ederson is there just slides through, it’s Romero’s hip, which just makes contact with the goalkeeper. It was a very awkward cross behind the city defense, and encourage Romero to go for it.

‘I hope the goalkeeper is doing well. Yes, they are uncomfortable, aren’t they, the medical team. You can see them both. It is not surprising that Ederson is leaving. It’s actually strange why he was allowed to continue playing at all, as he continued to play for a few minutes after the incident, clearly distraught and devastated.’
