Americans want taxpayer funds pulled from NPR for becoming a ‘political propaganda machine’, Daily Mail poll shows
Voters are widely seeking action against National Public Radio (NPR) after a whistleblower came forward last month accusing the station of liberal-biased reporting, a poll shows.
More than 44 percent of respondents to a DailyMail.com/TIPP survey said the broadcaster should lose taxpayer cash flow because of its political leanings.
Another 26 percent of more than 1,400 American adults said they should maintain their government assistance; and 31 percent said they weren’t sure.
NPR was rocked last month when one of its editors-in-chief, Uri Berliner, accused his employer of overly woke reporting, with a fixation on stories about race and identity.
Respondents largely no longer want to foot the bill for NPR’s “biased” reporting
Berliner argued in his article that NPR has “lost America’s trust” because it was filled almost entirely by Democrats.
In an open essay for The Free Press, the 25-year NPR veteran lambasted the country for being heavily dominated by Democrats, conservative voices were sidelined and “America had lost confidence.”
NPR extensively covered claims that then-President Donald Trump was a Russian asset, but held back on stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop and the Covid lab leak theory, Berliner said.
Meanwhile, historic tweets from NPR’s new CEO Katherine Maher resurfaced in which she espoused liberal causes, praised leading Democrats Black Lives Matter protesters and called Trump a “racist.”
Berliner later resigned, saying he had received criticism from Maher.
Republicans responded angrily to the revelations, saying they confirmed long-held fears about NPR.
Trump called the broadcaster on social media a “LIBERAL DISINFORMATION MACHINE.”
‘NO MORE FUNDING FOR NPR, A TOTAL SCAM!’ he posted.
NPR receives 1 percent of its budget directly from taxpayers — but gets much more than that indirectly through its local affiliates, says the American Enterprise Institute, a center-right think tank.

Old tweets from NPR CEO Katherine Maher included a veiled shot at Trump, labeling him a “deranged racist sociopath” and sharing her support for President Biden
Republican lawmaker Claudia Tenney of New York has summarized these concerns in a bill, the Defund NPR Act of 2024, which states that no taxpayer money should be sent “directly or indirectly” to the radio network.
The network had become a “partisan propaganda machine,” Tenney said.
There are few signs that the bill could become law.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations subcommittee held a hearing on May 8 on alleged bias in the public broadcaster’s reporting.
Our survey of 1,435 adults shows widespread support for defunding NPR.
Men, people aged 65 and over and adults under the age of 25 especially want to reduce federal funding flows to broadcasting.
Perhaps understandably, there is strong partisanship: More than half of Republican voters want to cut NPR funding, compared to just a third of Democrats.
The national survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent. It was conducted earlier this month by TIPP, which is known for the accuracy of its polls.
