Former England wonderkid could be RELEASED by Australian club after miserable season leaves his future in the balance

  • Jack Rodwell is in danger of being released by Sydney FC
  • The former Manchester City star is out of contract this summer
  • Rodwell was once touted as a future England superstar

Jack Rodwell’s A-League season, and possibly his Sydney FC career, is over after he was handed a two-match ban by Football Australia’s independent match review panel.

The former Everton and Manchester City defender was shown a straight red card at Allianz Stadium last Friday evening for a tackle on Central Coast player Christian Theoharous in Sydney’s 2-1 first leg semi-final defeat to the Mariners.

The MRP ruled the offense to be ‘serious foul play’, resulting in a two-match suspension.

Sydney has until 2pm on Tuesday to appeal the length of the ban, but the club is unlikely to do so.

It means Rodwell will not play again this season as the Sky Blues have a maximum of two games remaining in their 2023/24 season – Saturday night’s semi-final against the Mariners in Gosford and possibly the following weekend’s grand final.

The 33-year-old former England international may also have played his last game for the Sky Blues, with Rodwell – who has struggled with injuries this season – yet to be offered a new contract by Sydney.

“I’ll take some time to see what my options look like at the end of the season,” Rodwell told News Corp Australia last week.

Rodwell wasn’t the only Sydney player sent off last Friday night. Midfielder Corey Hollman was also given his marching orders late in the match after receiving a second yellow card.

Hollman has been suspended for one match, meaning he will be available for the grand final if the Sky Blues go ahead by ending the Mariners’ season this weekend.
