In the Mandalorian & Grogu film, Sigourney Weaver is tapped for a mysterious role in Disney’s next Star Wars film
Sigourney Weaver is reportedly in talks to star The Mandalorian and Grogu movie.
First reported by an industry insider Jeff Sneiderand reaffirmed by trade publications including Variety And The Hollywood Reporter, Weaver is apparently in talks with Lucasfilm about the next Star Wars film. The identity of Weaver’s character has not been revealed, but Sneider claims the legendary actor will play a “key role” in the film if she signs on.

If Weaver adds Pedro Pascal (he plays Din Djarin, aka the titular Mandalorian) to the film’s cast list, she will add to her illustrious list of appearances in tentpole sci-fi franchises. Weaver is best known for playing Ellen Ripley in the first four Alien films between May 1979 and November 1997, but she also portrayed the Na’vi known as Kiri in the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water and appeared as Dana Barrett in the first two Ghostbusters sweeps.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019 The Rise of Skywalker. It is one of several new Star Wars shows and movies in development and will follow on from the first three seasons of The Mandalorian TV series, all of which are available to stream on Disney Plus.
Lucasfilm and parent company Disney have given no clues about the plot of the upcoming film. However, it has been suggested that it reworks the main storylines that would have been used in it The Mandalorian season 4, for the movie.
Elsewhere we also know when we can watch The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was surprisingly revealed in January and was confirmed to be released exclusively in theaters. Unfortunately, we have to wait a long time, as the film won’t hit theaters until May 2026. Jon Favreau, co-creator The Mandalorianwill direct and executive produce the film alongside Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm’s new Chief Creative Officer.
A busy time for that galaxy far, far away
As I already mentioned, The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t the only Star Wars project Lucasfilm and Disney are working on. Up to seven films are currently in various stages of development, with this film and a new Jedi Order film starring Rey believed to be furthest along the development pipeline.
On the TV front Star Wars: The Acolyte will be the next series to debut on Disney Plus, aka one of the world’s best streaming services. It comes out on June 4 and follows in the footsteps of other Star Wars shows – The bad batch season 3 and Stories about the empire – which was released this year.
A Goonies style series called Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is also expected to launch before the end of 2024, while it is highly anticipated Andor season 2 should air in early 2025. Add the second season of that Star Wars: Ahsokawhich is still in the early stages of production, and these are busy times for that famous galaxy far, far away.
