I’m A Celebrity star is slammed by fans for comment about ‘vulgarity’ of Olly Alexander’s ‘overly sexualised’ Eurovision performance

Former Lib Dem MP Lembit Opik has been criticized after he raged over the ‘vulgarity’ of Olly Alexander’s Eurovision performance.

The I’m a Celebrity alum took to X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday in an explosive rant about the British entry’s performance, which included a “simulated sex act.”

“The British participation in the Eurovision Song Contest simulated a sexual act,” he wrote. ‘Graham Norton praised this performance! I had to keep my daughter from watching. As for the sexualisation of the Eurovision Song Contest, what action will BBC – or Ofcom – take against this vulgarity, given the reality of young viewers on a family programme?’

However, people on social media were quick to call Lembit “hypocrisy” and wonder why he had never shown outrage over suggestive songs by scantily clad female performers.

They also hinted that he was dating one of the famously provocative Cheeky Girls, with whom the former politician cheated on his fiancée.

Lembit, 59, was also questioned about why he let his young daughter watch the performance in the first place, since it took place beyond the watershed.

Olly, 33, represented Britain with his raw song Dizzy, and although things looked positive after the jury vote, he unfortunately didn’t get any votes from the public.

Twisting and writhing among his backup dancers, Olly gave it his all in red leather trousers and a ripped white vest as the crowd went wild.

He had hoped to break Britain’s Eurovision curse and take home the trophy after Sam Ryder’s success in 2022, but finished with just 46 points after receiving zero in the public vote.

But now-broadcaster Lembit shared his disgust at the spicy performance in several messages with X, and threatened to complain to Ofcom.

“Unless the BBC ensures that Norton apologizes live for praising a broadcast depicting an overtly sexual act at the Eurovision Song Contest, I will be referring this to Ofcom,” he wrote in a second post.

He followed this up with several more furious posts, which read: ‘Graham Norton continues to promote votes for UK Eurovision performances, packed with explicit sexual inferences. He has a few minutes to apologize for this British broadcast and his supportive comments. How can he and the BBC NOT understand the offense this causes to parents of young children?’;

“Fingers crossed for Olly,” says Graham Norton. So no apology for the derivative and quite explicit sexual act in the performance? OK, complaint being processed @BBC,’;

‘Eurovision used to be a family party. Only a totally irresponsible parent would allow a young child to watch this – considering this broadcast started well outside the watershed: and Graham Norton praised an overly sexualized performance.”

Lembit was pictured in the 2000s with Romanian pop duo The Cheeky Girls – known for their racy outfits and suggestive hits, including instructions to ‘touch my um’ – on a night out.

In 2006, his ex-fiancée, weather girl Sian Lloyd, explosively revealed that he had cheated on her with half of the group: Gabriela Irimia.

People were quick to criticize Lembit for his ‘fake outrage’ over Olly’s performance on Saturday – and highlighted his ‘hypocrisy’.

They wrote: “Would you complain about the ‘sexualization of children’ if this was a scantily clad young woman (maybe two…maybe sisters) gyrating around talking about touching bums? Especially after the watershed? Your silent homophobia shows mate, ‘;

‘Didn’t you cheat on your fiancée with one of the naughty girls? A bit hypocritical to go for moral outrage’;

“You were literally dating a sassy girl who sang a song about touching their asses and wore tight miniskirts. Just admit you’re homophobic,’;

“Wait until she gets on YouTube and sees what you did with the Cheeky Girls?”;

‘Don’t see any complaints about the number of female singers wearing only body stockings or Finland’s (very funny) entry.’

Others also pointed out that the performance in Britain took place after the 9pm TV watershed, and questioned why Lembit would have let his child watch the show in the first place if he was so outraged.

They said: ‘According to Wikipedia your daughters are 4 and 7. Why would you let them watch Eurovision or whatever after the watershed?’;

‘Our entry was after 9pm, which is the turning point for TV, it’s up to the parents then, even if you had seen the semi-finals you would have seen the staging’;

“Come on Lembit, the show didn’t start until 8pm so I think we can all understand right away that there might be some adult themes. This entire tweet smacks of false outrage. Do it better.’
