These are the most popular Australian baby names – and the unexpected girls’ one rising faster than any other

The best baby names have been revealed, with a surprise baby girl’s name topping the list for the first time in years.

New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages revealed the ten most popular baby names given to Australian children in the state in the 2023 calendar year, with Oliver and Isla coming out on top.

Oliver had been number one among the boys since 2014, but was replaced by Noah in 2022, who has since fallen to second place.

The top two girls’ names, Isla and Amelia, were separated by only four recorded births. The top girls name of 2022 was Charlotte, which dropped to fifth place in 2023.

In a twist, ten new names have entered the top 100 for girls.

The old-fashioned name Delilah also rose in popularity, rising 35 places from the 90th to the 55th most used name in 2023.

Other new names on the list include Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra.

Parents have often shared their difficulties with naming their children online, with many even changing their minds once the child has grown older.

While many previously worried about the extinction of Australia’s trendy baby names, a few classics also seemed to disappear from the top 100 list.

Riley, Gabriella, Harlow, Claire, Anastasia, Leah, Charlie, Elodie, Jasmine and Quinn have all relinquished their crowns.

Boy names that are falling out of favor and dropping out of the top 100 include Christian, Nicholas, Hamish, Vincent, Connor, Ashton, Dylan and Julian.
