Australian golfer Cam Percy has revealed that British Open champion Cam Smith will officially defect to LIV Golf – and has already signed with the controversial competition.
The rebel golf tour headed by Aussie golfing legend Greg Norman has courted controversy because of its Saudi Arabian backers and the country’s links to atrocities like the 911 attacks and the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
That hasn’t stopped the league from signing from of golf’s biggest names like Phil Mickelson and two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson.

Now, Percy says Smith and fellow Aussie Marc Leishman have joined their ranks.
‘Unfortunate, yeah, they’re gone,’ he told RSN radio.
‘I had a long conversation with Adam Scott and he was very interesting talking to about it, just where it is,’ he said.
‘He said he met with these guys (LIV) in 2017 (and) they were ready do all this. So, the tour has known for a long time that this stuff’s in the works.’
‘The more and more you look into it, some people don’t care, some people have got a conscience and do care,’ he said.
‘It really comes down to, you know, “They just executed 80 people this week, just chopped their heads off”. They’re not the nicest people in the world.
‘Do you just look past that and go, “oh well, I’m rich. I don’t really care”. It’s a tough one, it really is.’
Smith famously won The Open at St Andrews this year in the biggest achievement of his career to date.
He dodged questions about LIV Golf when pressed straight after the victory.
‘I just won the British Open and you’re asking about that? I think that’s, pretty, not that good,’ Smith said.

‘I don’t know, mate. My team around me worries about all that stuff. I’m here to win golf tournaments.’
It has been rumoured that Smith will join the LIV Golf tour after the upcoming FedEx Cup and Norman has said there will likely be a final round of player announcements in the coming weeks before ‘we’ve closed up shop’ on signing.
‘There will be more player announcements before [the FedEx Cup], but we’re set on the maximum amount of players,’ he added.
‘It’s interesting, we’re still getting calls from agents of top-40 players in the world wanting to join LIV but it’s too late now.
‘What it tells me though, is what we’re doing is very appealing to the world’s best players.’
