First, let’s look at how to get your hands on retinue soldiers in the first place. To do this, you must have a mansion in your settlement.

When you build a mansion, you automatically get five soldiers in your entourage, who will deploy themselves when the battle is about to begin. Since they are stronger than your usual soldiers, we recommend that you lead the attack with them, with the rest of your standard fighters behind them.

How to increase the size of your entourage in Manor Lords

To increase the size of your retinue, you need to click on the army option at the bottom, between construction and map. Your retinue is listed here and when you select them you have the option to gather, which can only be done during battle, or customize, which is where you need to go to increase size.

When adjusting your workforce, you can spend money from your treasury on hiring more employees. It costs 50 gold to recruit a warrior, and while there is an option to promote one of your citizens as a result, it is currently grayed out in early access.

This is also where you can upgrade your retinue, by improving the armor of each individual soldier. You can import a full suit of armor for 34 gold, or if you have a weaponsmith in your settlement, for 17 gold.

You can recruit up to 12 soldiers this way by paying 50 gold at a time, but if you have a garrison tower attached to your mansion you can add another 12. You can place one garrison tower per region you control, meaning you can have up to 24 retinues before you need to expand your control over the land.

How to restore recruits missing in retinue

If you encounter a pop-up stating that recruits are missing, all that has happened is that your soldiers have been killed. This happens with your normal army (the solution to this is to simply move more families in, something that happens automatically if your approval rate is high enough), but with your retinue the solution is simply to go back to the customization screen and re-apply take the missing soldiers.
