Indianapolis police fatally shoot male who pointed a weapon at others and threatened them

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police fatally shot a man Thursday afternoon as he pointed a gun at other people and threatened to shoot them.

Officers were dispatched to the scene on the city’s north side after a report of a person armed with a weapon, Officer William Young of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said at an impromptu news conference.

The man “pointed a gun at people (and) threatened to shoot them,” Young said. The situation then escalated and a police shooting ensued.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said in a news release.

Two officers discharged their service weapons and struck the person, the department said. No officers or uninvolved people were injured, the report said.

Detectives found a weapon at the scene, police said.

The shooting will be investigated by the police Critical Incident Response Team and Internal Affairs.

The officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting investigation.

The citizen-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing.
