Unfair amount charged by taxi driver? Here’s Uber’s advice on what to do
Uber has said some drivers have presented passengers with false images of fares to allegedly extract overpayments. The fake images resemble the actual Uber app interface and are intended to mislead passengers.
Uber has recommended that riders follow these steps during rides:
Match driver and vehicle information at the start of a trip: Check the driver and vehicle information displayed in your Uber app with the actual driver and car you get into. Make sure the license plate, make, model and photo of the driver match what is shown in the app.
Verify the trip after sharing your PIN with the driver: Make sure the “Trip Verified” message appears on your app screen. This confirms that the driver has started the ride correctly via the Uber system.
End the trip properly: When you reach your destination, drivers should end the trip on their apps. Check the ‘amount to pay’ pop-up notification in your own Uber app and not what appears on the driver’s phone.
Pay the correct rate: Only pay the driver the amount shown in your Uber app’s “Amount to Pay” notification, not any higher amount that the driver says is due. If the driver insists on a different rate, do not pay and report the problem immediately.
What should you do if you ever suspect you are seeing a fake rate image?
Ask the driver to refresh their app and then refresh your own app to verify the correct rate in advance.
If the driver continues to demand a higher fee, do not pay. Instead, take screenshots of the driver’s fare screen and any receipts.
Report the incident to Uber via the Help section of the app. Provide all relevant details and documentation to support Uber’s investigation.
If the situation escalates, please contact Uber support for further assistance.
