PSG’s dream continues in Dortmund
When people think of PSG, they mainly think of their shortcomings and not their successes.
The Parisians have always had a side full of superstars, many of football’s biggest names such as Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. have adorned the colors of the French club.
For all the star power they’ve possessed over the past decade, the one thing they desperately wanted to win has eluded them. That’s right, the Champions League trophy.
Four years ago they came close and reached the final, before losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in an empty Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. A real low point for the club.
The Parisians have had so many near misses, but it never really felt like they were going to make the move to get their hands on the good old ‘big ears’. That feeling has changed this year.
This side seems different. It’s not just Kylian Mbappé and friends, the team works for each other and for the badge.
If you win tonight, they will be one step closer to their dream.
Last night in Munich
I just had to bring up last night: it was a sensational match.
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid never disappoint, and once again they have given us another action-packed evening of European football.
It was 90 minutes going one way and then another. Real Madrid hit Bayern Munich with a sucker punch in the first half through Vinicius Jr. and was on the rise at half-time.
However, that changed quite quickly as the home side turned the match on its head within twelve minutes of the second half after Leroy Sane and Harry Kane both found the back of the net.
The Bavarians should have killed the fourteen-time winners, but they didn’t, and of course Madrid had to have the final say.
Vinicius Jr scored from the spot with seven minutes to play to ensure there is nothing to separate the two sides ahead of next week. You would have to say that it is now an advantage for Real Madrid.
If tonight is anything like what we saw at the Allianz Arena, we’re in for a treat.
How did they get here?
At that point I think we should look at how both sides reached the semi-finals.
As we know, both teams came through group F, which included AC Milan and Newcastle United. Dortmund topped the group with 11 points, while PSG finished second with eight. Now let’s take a closer look at their knockout stage results (we’ll list the overall scores):
- Round of 16: BORUSSIA DORTMUND 3-1 PSV & Real Sociedad 1-4 PSG
- Quarter final: BORUSSIA DORTMUND 5-4 Atletico Madrid and Barcelona 4-6 PSG
These two both got us to a draw in the quarter-finals, with both coming back from first-leg deficits to beat high-scoring thrillers.
If they get us another belter, we’ll all smile.
De ja vu in Dortmund
Something feels a little familiar about this fixture…
Oh yes, I know why, because they have already faced each other twice in the Champions League campaign.
Both Borussia Dortmund and PSG were drawn into Group F, which at the time was seen as the ‘group of death’. They almost made it out alive.
They faced each other in the first and last matchweek of the group stage, with PSG coming out on top 2–0 at the Parc des Princes on the first matchday, while scoring one goal apiece in the reverse match at Signal Iduna Park.
But that was then and this is now. PSG in particular feels like a different prospect than earlier in the season. I doubt the games earlier in the season have anything to offer.
It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, and they’ll both feel good (I’m sorry).
Ready for round two?
As Abba sings ‘Mamma Mia’, here we go again…
I’ve only just recovered from last night’s thriller and now it’s time to do it all over again. I’m certainly not complaining.
We stay in Germany tonight after last night’s performance in Munich, where Borussia Dortmund host PSG at the Signal Iduna Park.
Last night is certainly a tough act to follow from an enjoyment perspective, but these two sides certainly know how to entertain the fans. The Champions League always delivers results.
Are you ready then? Because I am. Let’s get this show on the road.
