Asus has revealed that it is working on a next-generation VR headset powered by Meta’s Horizon OS
Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) has confirmed that it is developing a VR headset, and it will be powered by Meta’s Horizon OS – which is the operating system that powers devices like the Meta Quest 3.
The first announcement comes from an official Meta blog postconfirming that Asus will “use its expertise as a leader in gaming solutions to develop an all-new gaming headset.”
While details are still scarce, Asus co-CEO SY Hsu hinted that it will likely be a powerful package. “We’re inspired by the incredible gaming community that has formed around virtual and mixed reality, and we know that the most passionate gamers want high-quality hardware,” Hsu said in the blog post. “With Meta Horizon OS, Asus and Republic of Gamers are building the next-generation gaming headset.”
It is not only Asus that will develop the Meta brand with new devices. It has also been confirmed that Microsoft is working on a limited edition Meta Quest device that is “inspired by Xbox.” Again, concrete details are scarce, though there’s a chance this device could apply Xbox’s aesthetic to a Meta Quest device and perhaps come with “Xbox controllers and Game Pass,” as teased by Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg in one Instagram post.
While little is known about these upcoming hardware devices, it seems likely that they will at least deliver the same performance as Meta Quest 3. The blog post mentions that the devices will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, specifically mentioning the Snapdragon
