Inter Milan are Serie A champions for the twentieth time after beating their city rivals AC Milan in an ill-tempered match at the San Siro.

Simone Inzaghi’s side needed a win to secure the title and looked to be on their way to a comfortable three points after goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram.

However, AC Milan made things nervous for their bitter rivals after Fikayo Tomori scored with ten minutes plus stoppage time remaining.

The match ended in chaos, with three players sent off in the space of four injury minutes.

Despite late pressure from AC Milan, Inter held on with a 17-point lead over their city rivals with five games to play.

At the final whistle, Inzaghi stormed onto the pitch to celebrate with his coaching staff and players.

Lautaro Martinez was left in tears as he fell to the ground, while his teammates hugged each other and celebrated in front of the fans.

The players then took out signs with the number ’20’ on them to celebrate their historic title win – which puts them one point ahead of AC Milan, but still 16 behind Juventus.

However, the club will receive a second star on their kit, as Italian clubs receive a star for every ten league titles they win.

It is Inzaghi’s first Scudetto of his coaching career and his side spent almost the entire season at the top of the table.

Inter took the lead in the 18th minute when Benjamin Pavard nodded in Federico Dimarco’s corner for Acerbi to head in from close range.

Thuram then drilled into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to give Inter a comfortable lead.

There are reports that manager Stefano Pioli could be replaced at the end of the season.

After the loss to Inter, he responded to the rumors by saying: ‘I do not know. According to the media, Inzaghi seemed to be struggling 14 months ago and look what he has achieved since. I’m happy here, I’m working well and I think the team has room for improvement.

“We’ll see at the end of the season where we all stand and talk about it.”
