Jetstar passenger fumes after 900g mistake lands her a hefty fee – but not everyone is on her side

A Jetstar passenger has slammed the airline after she was forced to pay an extra $75 to board her flight because her luggage exceeded the weight limit.

Monique McCreanor had booked a flight from Melbourne to Sydney on Saturday after winning a fitness competition called Deka Strong.

Ms McCreanor explained in a TikTok video that she had stayed behind to collect the prizes and as a result had changed her flights at the last minute.

“I stayed in the area for the podium ceremony, which means I booked new flights so I could do that,” she said.

‘I had to book with Jetstar because Virgin didn’t have any later flights.’

Ms McCreanor, who made a last-minute trip to the airport, was told her hand luggage was 900 grams more than the 7kg limit.

“I got $75,” she said.

She urged travelers to book extra checked bags before boarding their flights to avoid the same problem before claiming the extra $75 was excessive.

“$75 is a bit high for only 900 grams of excess weight,” she said.

Ms McCreanor said if she had known how much it would cost to pay for excess baggage, she would have booked the extra amount at a cheaper rate.

Social media users remained divided over her experience, with some saying in a now-deleted video that she should have known better.

‘No, sorry, it’s clear [a] weight allowance. You went there, you pay,” one person wrote.

“Seriously, it doesn’t matter who you’re with, you’re going to have to pay anyway, those are the rules,” another added.

Others shared their own experiences with paying for excess baggage.

“They did this to me on my honeymoon… I was bullied,” said one.

A spokesperson for Jetstar told Daily Mail Mail Australia that the airline has strict restrictions on travelers carrying excess luggage.

“Our carry-on baggage restrictions are designed to ensure a smooth boarding process, sufficient space to store all carry-on bags safely and comfortably and the correct weight and balance for take-off,” he said.

“We are offering customers incredibly low rates, including a carry-on allowance of seven kilograms spread over two items and the ability to request pre-purchase of up to 14 kilograms.”

The spokesperson said the $75 fee takes into account passengers who have not pre-booked excess carry-on luggage.

Travelers arriving at the boarding gate with more than 7 kg of carry-on luggage will be charged a fee of approximately $80 for domestic flights.

Customers can also choose to purchase an additional +7kg carry-on bag, which costs $75.

Travelers have been advised that it is cheaper to purchase excess baggage when booking flights.
