Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark join Queen Margrethe to celebrate her 84th birthday – after a frosty display on Easter ski-ing trip

Queen Mary and King Frederik joined Queen Margrethe in Fredensborg today ahead of her birthday celebrations after appearing frosty with each other during a family ski trip over Easter.

The royal couple, Queen Margrethe and her sister, Princess Benedkeek, posed outside the royal residence alongside Margrethe’s beloved sausage dog Tilia, who was also in attendance.

The family celebrated privately at Fredensborg Castle, a setting used for important family events such as weddings, silver wedding anniversaries and birthdays.

Mary, 52, put her fashion best foot forward and opted for a baby blue jacket, along with a brooch, which she pinned to the left side of her chest.

She opted for navy blue trousers and a blouse, along with matching pointy heels, and pulled her brunette locks into a practical ponytail.

Looking elegant, the new queen opted for simple dangling diamond earrings and opted to wear natural makeup today.

Princess Benedkeek also wore a blue blouse and patterned knee-length skirt, along with a modest blazer and matching pearl jewelry.

Margrethe looked sophisticated as she wore a matching navy blazer with a conservative midi skirt.

The former paired this with a red and white patterned blouse, which she tucked into her skirt and finished the look with black buckle heels.

King Frederik, 55, looked dapper in a charcoal gray checked suit which he teamed with a crisp white shirt and polished brown shoes.

The pair, who took over the Danish throne in January, stood side by side, with Mary’s hands at her sides and Frederick’s behind his back before waving to the crowd of royal fans.

The monarch opted for a sapphire blue tie, matching the same color scheme as his wife, in a show of sartorial solidarity amid rumors of marital troubles in recent months.

In November 2023, photos of Crown Prince Frederick enjoying a night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casnova sent shockwaves through Denmark.

In the photos, the royal family and the billionaire’s former daughter-in-law, the Duchess of Alba, were seen walking through Madrid before heading to her apartment complex, changing and heading out for the evening.

The publication of the photos resulted in Genoveva, 47, issuing a statement denying any romantic relationship between herself and the royal family and decrying the “malicious” rumors.

In recent weeks, Queen Mary has fueled the rumor mill by completing a series of solo royal engagements without her husband.

On April 3, the mother of four attended the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Home Guard at the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen.

Four days later, Queen Mary completed another solo engagement when she attended the opening of a deer park at Naerum.

On April 9, Queen Mary stepped out again without her husband for a charity conference in Copenhagen.

King Frederick and Queen Mary’s schedules appeared to overlap somewhat at the beginning of the month as they welcomed several guests to Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

Last Friday, the official Instagram account of the Danish royal family shared two posts detailing Frederik and Mary’s separate engagements.

On the same day, photos emerged of the couple’s ski trip to Switzerland, which did little to quell rumors of trouble between the couple.

The couple seemed very frosty towards each other during a March trip to Verbier, an exclusive ski resort in Switzerland.

Mary, 52, seemed impatient with Frederik, 55, as she turned her back on him as they prepared to hit the slopes.

Pictures showed Mary, who was the epitome of ski chic in a jacquard wool and cashmere blend turtleneck from Moncler, looking away from her husband – as he stood defiantly with his hands on his hips.

The couple was accompanied by their four children: Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and 13-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
