British tourist, 30, is found dead in Algarve holiday apartment after ‘friend’ calls police to warn them but then goes ‘missing’

  • The man in his 30s was discovered in a flat in the city of Albufeira

A British tourist has been found dead in a holiday apartment on Portugal’s Algarve.

The man, aged 30, was discovered at the Orada Tourist Apartments near the marina in the city of Albufeira.

He is said to have stayed in the building with a friend.

The respected Portuguese daily Correio da Mana reported that the whereabouts of the friend, whose nationality has not yet been made public, is unknown.

Portugal’s GNR police were the first police force to be alerted, but the investigation has now been handed over to the country’s police force, Policia Judiciaria.

There has been no official comment from the police yet.

In addition to the police, firefighters and ambulance personnel were also mobilized as part of the emergency response.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 4-star complex Orada Tourist Apartments features an outdoor swimming pool, 220 apartments and a reception staffed 24/7.

A well-placed source close to the ongoing investigation said: ‘The body of the British man was found on the floor near the toilet door of his apartment.

‘There was a lot of vomit around him.

‘The police suspect that he has had a health problem.

‘The GNR forces received a call at around 7am this morning from an English-speaking man they believe was a friend, saying a man was likely dead in the flat.

“But that same person simply disappeared and the police can’t find him at the moment, which is what’s strange about all this and why the PJ police were called.

“They are currently trying to determine his whereabouts.

‘The dead man should have left the apartment this morning and was likely to fly back to Britain and investigators are trying to confirm whether it was his friend who called them and whether he ultimately simply went to Faro airport after reporting the emergency . phone call.

‘They all find it very strange that after the call he did not realize that he had to stay nearby as the person who had called the emergency services.’

Another source added: ‘There are no obvious signs of violence in the apartment or anything to indicate the man’s death was the result of foul play.

‘It appears it is related to a health problem.

‘But an autopsy still needs to take place and the Policia Judiciaria will carry out a full forensic examination of the apartment, speak to reception and request CCTV footage.

‘Officers will also attempt to locate and speak to the person who called.’

According to police sources, the dead man was on a ‘short holiday’ to Portugal. He is said to have traveled with only a small suitcase.
