  • The world number 1 cut a frustrated figure and lost patience with one spectator
  • Djokovic was then caught on camera telling the individual to ‘shut up’

Novak Djokovic lost his cool and told a noisy spectator to shut up during his defeat to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo Masters semi-finals.

The visibly irate world number 1 crashed out of the tournament on Saturday night after a 6-4 1-6 6-4 defeat to 10th-ranked Ruud, as his struggles in 2024 continued.

It marked Ruud’s first victory over the 24-time Grand Slam title winner in his six attempts, with Djokovic losing in the deciding set and expressing his frustration.

Djokovic was captured on camera turning to a spectator and unleashing a string of expletives, seemingly enraged by the noise coming from the stands.

After missing a simple forehand while trailing 3-4, Djokovic, on the cusp of another setback, tensed up before turning his attention to the rowdy.

“Would you shut up?” he shouted before mumbling under his breath.

A video on YouTube apparently showed the audience member being ejected from the venue.

Djokovic had struggled in the early stages of the match, dropping two of his first three service games, with Ruud decisively taking the first set.

However, the 36-year-old responded in style, taking the second set to win the over-the-distance showdown and set up a nail-biting deciding set.

But Djokovic made a double fault on Ruud’s match point and surrendered himself to defeat.

“There are definitely positives to take away, but I’m used to a very high standard in terms of expectations and results,” he admitted.

‘Not having a title is – compared to the past fifteen years – not a great season at all.’

Djokovic’s elimination followed his third-round knockout at Indian Wells and a semifinal loss at the Australian Open. He is still looking for his first title of the year.

“I had semi-finals in Australia, semi-finals here,” he added. “It’s normal to expect to have seasons where you don’t start well, this is the season.

‘Hopefully I can record. In terms of results, I can continue to build from here.
