Fernando Alonso is set to announce he has signed a new two-year contract to remain Aston Martin, Mail Sport can reveal.
In addition, the 42-year-old two-time world champion will also take on an ambassadorial role.
He courted – or was courted by – other teams, including Red Bull, who considered him as a replacement for Max Verstappen if their star man had wanted to bail out in light of the scandal the team had been embroiled in for the past two months . .
It is understood that a statement will be issued within the next hour or so confirming that Alonso will stay and that Alonso will hold media interviews late this afternoon to discuss his continued involvement with the Silverstone-based team.
Alonso is recognized as one of the best drivers of his generation, any generation, but his entry into Formula 1 after his 44th birthday will take him to an age that no contemporary driver has ever reached.

Michael Schumacher, who beat Alonso to the title in 2004 and 2005, retired from Ferrari at the age of 37. He returned to Mercedes, but eventually left at the age of 43.
The Spaniard’s survival will allow him to compete for Aston Martin under the new regulations due to be introduced in 2026.
Aston will then be powered by Honda engines.
