Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, insists the age difference between herself and husband Aaron, 33, is ‘never’ noticeable in their relationship

Sam Taylor-Johnson has insisted the age difference between herself and husband Aaron is ‘never’ noticeable in their relationship.

The director, 57, who married her husband in 2012, three years after they met on the set of Nowhere Boy, is 24 years older than the actor, 33.

The couple has a fiercely private relationship and has previously caused controversy among the public due to their age difference.

Sam acknowledged that their age difference makes them “a little off” compared to most other couples, but she doesn’t understand why it’s still a big deal.

Asked whether their age difference ever becomes apparent in terms of different interests or points of reference, she told The Guardian’s Saturday magazine: ‘No, it never does. I mean, it’s coming up now because you asked.

“And it comes out from the outside perspective of people who don’t know us, because I think people will always do that.

‘We’re a bit of an anomaly, but it’s like this: after fourteen years you think: it doesn’t really matter, does it?’

Back To Black filmmaker Sam is mum to Angelica, 26, and Jessie, 17, who she shares with ex-husband Jay Jopling and shared Wylda, 13, and Romy, 12, with Aaron.

Sam further revealed that she never hesitated to get involved with a much younger man.

She said: ‘If I had been cynical for even a second it wouldn’t have worked. If I had questioned anything, it would never have worked. I’m quite instinctive. I have put my feet first in everything in my life. I always say, “This seems great,” and I jump right in and go through the experience, whether it’s good or bad.

“It’s definitely a ‘f***it, let’s get on with it’ approach. And I’m a big believer in the heart ruling everything. Love conquers all.’

Sam and Aaron have worked on and off before, but she’s recently been busy making Back To Black in London, while Aaron flew to Australia alone for six weeks to make The Fall Guy.

The mother-of-four admitted it has been ‘tough’ for the couple and they have no plans to return to working at the same time.

She added: ‘We enlisted his parents to help with the kids and we all went, bye! But that was tough and neither of us enjoyed it, so it’s back to being one on one again.’

It comes as the couple put on a loving show on Monday as they attended the Black To Black premiere afterparty at 100 Wardour Street in London.

Sam directed Back To Black, a biopic about the life of the late singer Amy Winehouse, who tragically died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27.

The film has been described as ‘a never-before-seen look at Amy Winehouse’s early rise and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back To Black’, according to Focus functions.

It stars Marisa Abela, 27, as Amy, while her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil is played by Jack O’Connell.

Blake, 41, who was married to the singer between 2007 and 2009, previously admitted introducing her to heroin and is seen by many of her fans as partly responsible for her death.
