Is it best to buy your meat at the supermarket or the butcher? Aussie Shopper’s test produces a very clear winner
An Australian man has finally answered an age-old grocery question: is it best to buy your meat at the butcher or in the supermarket?
Matt Westfrom Queensland, decided to test the beef from both retailers after cooking for taste, quality and weight.
He bought 500 grams of grass-fed beef from Woolworths ($11) and the same amount from his local butcher ($8.50).
βThe price alone makes it worth it in my opinion,β he said in a video.
‘They’re both premium ground beef, both grass-fed, so technically on the same playing field.’

Mr. West was shocked by one detail when he decided to cook the supermarket meat.
βI was really surprised by how much water came out of the ground beef,β he said.
‘I also wanted to see their weight after they were cooked, and the weight from the supermarket came to 371 grams.’
He repeated the process with meat from the butcher.
‘The butcher’s minced meat contained much less water. I couldn’t believe the difference between the two,β he said. ‘The butcher’s mince came to 417 grams, 46 grams more than the supermarket.’
The grass-fed beef from Woolworths cost Mr West $11
Based on the price and weight, Mr. West made his decision.
‘In my opinion: go to the butcher! You will save more money, get more beef for your money and you can support a local business.β
Consumers should be aware that meat from supermarkets comes in containers and retains more moisture in the packaging.
All major supermarkets have customer satisfaction teams that you can contact if you experience a problem with any of your purchases, including minced meat.
Australian shoppers were surprised by Mr West’s finds.
βEvery butcher near me is so expensive though,β said one.
βI bought Scottish fillet from two butchers and it was rubbish compared to the supermarket,β wrote another.
‘I really thought the butcher was for rich people, so I’m definitely going to try this myself!’ one customer claimed.
‘A few months ago we switched to the local butcher. Better meat and we no longer throw away meat that spoils,’ says another.
