Panthers star five-eighth Jarome Luai won’t win many friends in Parramatta after his pre-game comments that Penrith is the ‘daddy’ of rival NRL clubs in Sydney’s west.
Luai posted footage of his celebrations after the Panthers emphatic 28-12 NRL grand final victory over the Parramatta Eels that secured his club’s second consecutive premiership.
He was depicted holding the Provan-Summons Trophy, Samoan flag draped across his lap and a cigar in his mouth with the caption “Daddy loves you” and a heart emoji.
Luai’s cheeky Instagram story mocks Eels fans who thrashed him for his ‘Daddy’ comments
The celebratory footage comes after Luai hit the hornet’s nest in the run-up to the NRL decider by declaring Penrith to be Parramatta’s father.
It came after teammate Brian To’o with the . had spoken Sydney Morning Herald about how Penrith took the lead in western Sydney when it came to developing local juniors.
“Things have changed,” To’o said.
“Not that many children come through the Parramatta system coming from the west. The majority of the people on the Parramatta team are from other countries or other parts of NSW…or even Penrith.
“It’s pretty cool to see how many of us Penrith juniors have made it through the lower classes to the big leagues.
“You can call us Daddy,” Luai joked.
Luai celebrates with 10-month-old daughter Akira after winning the NRL premiership again
His comments went down like a lead balloon with Parra supporters ahead of the grand finale.
“You never saw this stubbornness and arrogance from Storm and Roosters players when they dominated for the past 10 years. These guys win one premiership and think they’re untouchable,” Chris Buttigieg wrote
“I seem to recall a certain person sticking his mouth out in the Origin arena… which didn’t work out so well for ‘Where’s Luai’. Lucky for you, Nathan might be able to get you over the line,” said Peter Moore.
I hate both teams, but this man makes me hope for a Parramatta flogging. How can this man do his little public prayer in the field and be so arrogant? I could be wrong, but doesn’t the Bible teach you to be humble?’ Garrick Keene asked
Luai continued the father’s puns with a video of him on the field with baby Akira
Unfortunately for Jarome, most of his action now comes from his trunk – his contributions on the pitch, other than the spectacular jump on one’s back, have really fallen off this season,” added Ed Peters.
Luai also shared a party video on the pitch, where he held his daughter Akira with the caption “Dada loves you” and a photo with teammates with the caption “hey papa!”.
Ironically, Luai became a father for the third time in the week leading up to the grand finale.
Luai also celebrated his heritage by draping a Samoan flag around him while celebrating
Any fears he would miss the decider were thwarted when partner Bailey Paris Toleafoa was induced on Monday. The couple welcomed baby Halo into the world and joined 10-month-old Akira and 4-year-old son Izzy.
“We said if we made it to the grand final it would be initiated on Monday,” Luai said earlier this week.
“The baby was supposed to come on Tuesday, but everything went according to plan. She was induced when we scheduled it and the baby came at 2:00 PM.
“They’re in the hospital now, but I’m going to the hospital after training to pick them up and see how they’re doing. Hopefully they get fired this afternoon.
“I tried to stay on Monday, but they kicked me out. I got home at midnight and checked them every hour after that to see how they were doing.
“I hear the baby in there is a little angel, so I can’t wait to see her.”
