Brighton fans were furious after Arsenal were awarded a controversial penalty in the first half on Saturday.

Tariq Lamptey was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus in the penalty area and referee John Brooks pointed to the spot.

VAR reviewed the incident and despite Lamptey appearing to hit the ball first, the decision stood on the pitch.

And Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka sent Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen the wrong way when he fired his penalty into the corner of the net.

But fans were unhappy with the decision.

One fan said: ‘Absolutely no pen! Shocking decision. Shame on the VAR.’

Another fan said: The first contact is outside the penalty area and Lamptey also gets the weakest touches on the ball… that should NOT be a PENALTY!

A third added: ‘Lamptey winning the ball is a pen, but Odegaard playing basketball in our box is not. Understood.’
