Data shows that people in Turkey have the most sexual partners.

The country’s citizens have an average of 14.5 partners, despite the vast majority of the country following more traditional Islamic practices.

This is a stark comparison with India, where the average citizen has three sexual partners – the fewest of any country studied by researchers at Overview of the world population.

Although the US is often seen as a country with loose views on sexuality and dating, America didn’t even make the top 10.

The US took 12th place, while Americans had an average of 10.7 partners.

Figures collected by the non-profit research firm analyzed the average number of partners in 46 countries.

Through surveys, the researchers found that most people around the world have nine partners in their lifetime.

Australia and New Zealand came in second and third, behind Turkey, with 13.3 and 13.2 partners respectively.

And Britain came in surprisingly low, at 21st, with Brits having sex with around 9.8 people over their lifetime.

China and Slovakia followed India closely as countries with the fewest number of sexual partners.

The researchers noted that this could be due to the fact that many of India’s 1.4 billion residents follow strict dating and marriage rules, such as arranged marriages and no sex before marriage.

The findings come as Generation Z is said to be having less sex than previous generations, which could be due to more of these adults living at home and avoiding alcohol.

The findings were based solely on respondents’ accounts of their own sexual history, meaning it is possible they over- or underestimated it.

Turkey, a country of 85 million people famous for ancient historical sites and relaxing bathhouses, has an average of 14.5 sexual partners.

The researchers offered no explanation for Turkish promiscuity, and the finding goes against the generally traditional Turkish approach to sex and relationships.

More than 99 percent of the country’s residents are Muslim, a religion that usually comes with strict dating rules.

According to Islamic matchmaking site Muzz, the practices include dating for the purpose of finding a life partner, no sex before marriage and dating with a chaperone.

However, research shows that dating apps for casual affairs are becoming more widespread in the country.

Australia and New Zealand both followed closely behind Turkey, with an average of 13.3 and 13.2 partners respectively.

Unlike Turkey, both countries tend to approach dating in a more informal way, with young people in particular meeting partners through apps and in settings such as bars or coffee shops.

For example, a 2023 report from insurance marketplace Choosi found that 62 percent of Aussies use online dating, with 40 percent choosing this method over others.

Additionally, 67 percent of adults said they were active users of dating apps, and 77 percent had used them before.

Research from AppMagic found that 12,000 people in New Zealand downloaded the dating app Bumble in January 2024 alone.

Iceland and South Africa rounded out the top five most sexually promiscuous countries.

Americans have an average of 10.7 partners, putting the US in 12th place.

As in Australia and New Zealand, this may be due to the rise of dating apps. Recent data shows that the number of Americans meeting their spouses through apps like Hinge and Tinder has increased by nearly 20 percent over the past decade.

However, the World Population Review team noted that the number of sexual partners varies drastically by state due to local cultures and religious preferences.

For example, residents of Louisiana reported an average of 15.7 partners, while people in the largely Mormon state of Utah had only 2.6 partners.

‘The age at which a person loses his or her virginity can also influence the number of sexual partners he or she has. In the United States, on average, people lose their virginity at the age of seventeen,” the team wrote.

Britons now have about 9.8 partners in their lives.

While the US and UK have similar dating app usage rates and similar cultural approaches to sex, Britain could have scored lower because the country has far fewer people.

Great Britain has a population of about 67 million, while the US has a population of over 330 million.

India finished last with an average of just three sexual partners. This may be due to the country’s very traditional dating practices, including arranged marriages.

In fact, a survey found that more than 93 percent of Indians have arranged marriages, which severely limit their sexual prospects.

China and Slovakia followed closely, with parental matchmaking becoming more common in both countries.
