I’m from Texas and live in the UK,  these are all the weird things I’ve found about British people –  including more goths, ‘crazy’ drug culture and ‘toxic men’

An American woman living in Britain has revealed all the ‘weird’ things about British life – including ‘toxic men’ and ‘a lot of goths’.

Burkleigh, who moved to Britain from Texas to study marine biology, often posts spotlights on TikTok @iloveolives2002and a clip of her listing all the oddities she’s noticed has been viewed more than 350,000 times.

The university student told her followers: ‘Okay so I’ve been living in the UK for about three years now and I feel like one of the main differences people always talk about between the states and Britain is the weather or the food . .

“But there are a lot of weird social anomalies, or at least differences, between Britain and Texas that I just didn’t expect.”

The first thing Burkleigh noticed is that there are more alternative or ‘goth’ people in Britain.

An American woman who moved to Britain from Texas has revealed all the ‘weird anomalies’ she has noticed in Britain since making the move across the pond

She explained, “First of all, there are some goths and yes, there are goths in the United States or at least in Texas, but they travel in packs, in groups of three.

‘There is a gothic-themed Christmas market, there are gothic-themed club nights.

“They’re the nicest people you’ve ever met, but it’s like there’s a big community and they’re very loved and very appreciated.”

Secondly, she confirmed the long-standing stereotype that Britons can drink heavily from a young age.

The TikToker said, “Another thing is, if you consider yourself the heavyweight of your friend group or if you’re someone who started drinking young.

“I’d say the youngest most American people start drinking is about 15 or 16 years old, and it’s illegal in an area of the house where an older friend could bring White Claws.

“If you’ve had that experience, you’re probably off to a really good start; many people are not allowed to drink until they are 18 or 21, even though it is legal.

‘Don’t drink with British people. They pick up the bottle at noon and never put it down again.”

Continuing her list, she revealed: “And this may be Europe in general, but I think it’s so much more noticeable with the British people, just because of their humor and their willingness to say anything.

“There’s this abrasive, tough love feeling I get from my British friends, but they literally think Americans are the dumbest people on the planet.”

Laughing, she adds, “Really, literally, they spend all their time laughing at our politics, laughing at our culture, laughing at our media, laughing at our celebrities doing stupid things.

“And it’s like we’re not aware of it because we’re kind of ignorant.

‘All we care about when it comes to British people is their accents, so we don’t know how much the rest of the world thinks we’re stupid and we don’t care.

“Maybe that’s a problem we need to work on. But I don’t know, I definitely noticed it.’

As for the drugs, Burkleigh claims: ‘Again, this is only comparable to my experience in Texas, so it may be the same in Miami or LA, but the drug culture in Britain is crazy.

“The amount of horse tranquilizer these people put up their noses is enough to literally kill a horse.”

‘I didn’t even know this was a drug that people used recreationally and I think it’s really only big in the UK.’

She wonders, “Let me know, I don’t think it’s big in any state of the US.”

She then tells her compatriots that British people walk everywhere, regardless of the time of day.

She told viewers: “I think people know that walking is very important in Europe and it’s just not as easy in the US because of the infrastructure and highways and the focus we put on cars.

‘But I don’t think you know how willing British people are to walk, despite having very good public transport – or at least better public transport than in Texas.

‘It’s not unusual for a friend to walk an hour home on a night out just because he doesn’t want to spend the money on a taxi – an hour home, drunk at night, crazy.’

Finally, the American compares her experiences dating men in Britain with those back home in the US, with American men coming out on top for her.

“The average 20-year-old British man has a body count of 22,” she boldly claims.

“They’re worse than the frat boy who just broke your heart, I promise. I don’t know what they put in the water to make these men grow up the way they are, but some of them are animals.”

The student admits: ‘I’m sure they grow out of it and that’s probably a bit of a stereotype, but I don’t know the human being. From what I’ve seen: crazy.’

Brits rushed to the comments to debate whether Burkleigh’s view was correct – with some agreeing, and others wondering if they lived in the same UK.

One user wrote: ‘I probably live in a different UK in the multiverse,’ while a second user asked: ‘Are we in the same UK?’

Referring to the American’s claim that Brits walk everywhere, a third viewer wrote: ‘One hour isn’t that long, is it? It takes me about an hour to walk to school.”

Another agreed: ‘The drunken walk home is iconic. Walk home for an hour in the cold, eat your cheese chips and drink a bottle of Fanta. When you’re at home, you’re actually sober and your hangover is less fatal.’

Someone else said: ‘Running home drunk was the one. Sometimes a bus would take 15 to 20 minutes, so we would run three to four miles until the bus caught up with us.”

Meanwhile, another joked: ‘It’s not that we don’t want to pay for a taxi, it’s just that we spent all our money on booze and horse narcotics so now we’re broke and have to walk home.’

A woman from Britain agreed with the TikToker’s comments about British men, joking: ‘No, they don’t grow out of it at all. A British girl here is dating a guy from Texas, and I can’t stand British men.’

Someone else commented: ‘As a goth who doesn’t live in Brighton, the goth and alternative stuff there is UNIQUE.’

One viewer reminisced: ‘British children’s’ first drink is about 13-14 hours in a field with your friends and a bottle of Glenn’s (cheap vodka) best nights ever. Put a speaker in there and you’ve got a party.’

Another Brit agreed: ‘We start drinking at 13 and 14 and are done by 21.’
