Virgil van Dijk has revealed his best ever teammate at Liverpool, with the Reds captain branding the former player ‘outstanding’.

The Liverpool captain has been crucial to the club’s success since joining from Southampton in a £75million transfer seven years ago and has been a tangible figure in Jurgen Klopp’s reign.

By leading the Reds to a first Premier League title, a Champions League crown and several other domestic honors during his time at the club, Van Dijk has earned legendary status at Anfield.

Now he is on the verge of lifting the Premier League title as Liverpool’s captain, with Thursday’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United giving the Reds a two-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table.

Van Dijk has played alongside Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson, but has picked a former striker as his favorite Liverpool colleague.

Speaking on The Rest of Football podcast, the 32-year-old presenter told Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, the former Reds goalscorer.

“I don’t want to put other players down, but let me talk about players who have left, for example,” said Van Dijk.

“Bobby Firmino has been a huge figure in the success we’ve had over the last few years, he’s kept those two next to him in particular, who are excellent, he’s kept them together.

‘The triangle they formed, the way they worked together. For me personally, the defensive work they did to make things easier for us at the back was insane and excellent.

“He has been difficult to defend in training so far, so I would like to give him credit,” he added.

Van Dijk did not want to downplay the achievements of his current teammates and went on to praise Liverpool’s current squad, who have already won the Carabao Cup this season.

He continued: ‘But at the moment I’m playing with great players, you know, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and I won’t forget Joel Matip.

“Obviously he’s injured now, but he’s been incredible for the football club coming in as a free agent. This generation of this era that we have been under Jurgen Klopp has been a great era in my opinion.

‘And each of the players who were part of that should certainly take full credit for that.’
