A Pennsylvania man vacationing with his family at a Delaware beach resort was ecstatic to find a rare purple pearl stuck in one of the clams he was eating, worth a staggering $4,000.

Scott Overland was dining at the Salt Air restaurant in Rehoboth, Del., and nearly finished his meal when he came across the precious pearl.

While he was chewing, Overland said he felt “something hard and crunchy,” Fox5 News reported.

At first he said he thought it’a bead, or a candy,” even noting “one of those candies that get on the paper,” because of its “clear, lavender, almost purple, color.’

Overland said when he… looked more closely at the shell, he saw ‘it had a small notch where something grew.’ And, when he placed the pearl in the notch, explained ‘it fit perfectly!’

“The pearl was perfectly round,” he said, “and fitted perfectly in the shell.”

When he found it valued at $4,071, he replied, “Not bad for a bowl of mussels on vacation,” Fox5 News reported.

A Google is how he learned that depending on the size and shape of the pearl, it could run anywhere from $600 to $1,600.

To learn more about his treasure, he relied on the experts — GIA, the foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones and pearls — to find out how precious his pearl was: an estimated $4,071. He did not share what he intended to do with the pearl.

“Not bad for a bowl of mussels on vacation,” he said. “We went on vacation expecting to bring back a T-shirt or a mug. Our kids got some hermit crabs,” he said, “we didn’t expect to come back with something like this.”
