This is the brave moment when a cell phone theft suspect is stopped by a huge rugby tackle from a passerby before a woman uses a stranglehold to prevent him from getting away.

Images shared on social media show the unidentified person sprinting along St Thomas Street near London’s Borough Market yesterday.

However, the suspect, who wore black clothing including a baseball cap and a surgical mask to cover his face, was met by heroic Londoners.

As the ‘trip him up’ is heard in the background, a bystander steps off the sidewalk and rugby tackles the alleged thief in barriers along the street.

A middle-aged woman then applies a stranglehold to prevent him from getting away as the suspect yells, “Please, my neck, my neck. Let me sit up straight. I can not breathe.’

Another man tries to calm the erratic suspect as confused onlookers ask what’s going on.

Several witnesses can be heard saying ‘call the police’, while one says, ‘Robbing people and that’s what happens.’

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Police were called to St Thomas Street, SE1 on September 29 at 3:17pm due to reports of a robbery.

“It was reported that a woman had her phone stolen by a man who was subsequently held by members of the public.

When officers arrived a short time later, the man and the public had left the crime scene. The phone had been recovered and was once again in the possession of the woman.

“No arrests have been made. The investigations continue.’
