Gwyneth Paltrow admits she’s feeling a ‘deep sense of impending grief’ as she prepares for son Moses, 17, to leave home for college: ‘I’ve been defined by motherhood’

Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted she is preparing to “mourn” the loss of son Moses when he heads off to college this fall.

The actress, 51, shares her 17-year-old son with ex-husband Chris Martin and later this year she will become an empty nester as Moses follows in the footsteps of sister Apple, 19, by leaving home for further education.

Her stepson Brody, husband Brad Falchuk’s youngest child, is also going to college at the same time.

Requested by The Sunday times how she feels about the situation, Gwyneth confessed: “On the one hand, incredible sadness. A deep sense of impending sadness.

“On the other hand, this is exactly what should happen. Your children are supposed to be young adults who can achieve, cope, make connections, and be resilient. That’s exactly what you want. And that means they leave the house.”

Opening up about her “complicated” emotions, Gwyneth continued, “I am so defined and so fulfilled by motherhood. It was kind of central… it was kind of central kind of… I don’t even know how to put it into words! It’s like the guiding force. It’s what I return to.’

While she admitted that she has turned down social plans with friends to make the most of the time she has left with Moses, she added that in some ways it is “exciting” because it will be the first time in 20 years that she doesn’t. ‘obligated to a school calendar’.

Earlier this month, Gwyneth shared a rare photo with Moses after a fan asked her to post her “favorite” photo with her son.

She looked radiant as she went makeup-free in the selfie as she rested her head on Moses’ shoulder.

The teen looked the spitting image of dad Chris in the snap, as he smiled for the camera while dressed in a black knit sweater and tiny hoop earrings.

“Not favorite, but recent,” Gwyneth captioned the photo.

Gwyneth and Chris ended their marriage by ‘consciously uncoupling’ in 2016, but their children are still their biggest achievement.

The Goop founder previously told British Vogue: ‘We just weren’t quite right for each other. But man, we loved our kids.”

Speaking about their breakup, Gwyneth said: ‘Between the day I found out and the day we finally admitted the truth, we tried everything. We didn’t want to fail. We didn’t want to disappoint anyone.

‘We definitely didn’t want to hurt our children. We didn’t want to lose our family.’

In 2018, Gwyneth married screenwriter Brad after hitting the big time on the set of Glee.

Meanwhile, Chris has been in a relationship with actress Dakota Johnson since 2017 and earlier this month reports emerged that the couple are engaged.

It’s claimed the 47-year-old singer proposed to Dakota ‘a while ago’ and has the full blessing of ex-wife Gwyneth and their children.
