Oliver Hudson reveals childhood ‘trauma’ he faced with mom Goldie Hawn as he admits he felt ‘unprotected at times’ while she was ‘living her life’

Oliver Hudson spoke candidly about the childhood trauma he experienced growing up with Goldie Hawn as his mother.

The 47-year-old actor, the firstborn child of Hawn and her ex-husband Bill Hudson, revealed he took a Hoffman Institute course to understand his trauma during a recent episode of his Sibling Rivalry Podcast.

Although he expected it to mainly focus on his relationship with his estranged father, the Scream Queens alum was surprised to find that he had the most “trauma” over his Oscar-winning mother.

“My mother was the one who almost left me with the most trauma, interestingly enough, because she was my primary caregiver and I was with her all the time, so I felt unprotected at times,” Oliver said.

“She’s supposed to be at work. She had new boyfriends that I didn’t really like,” he continued, emphasizing that his mother was just “living her life” and describing her as “a great mother.”

“This is my own perception as a child who had no father and needed her,” he clarified.

“And sometimes she just wasn’t there and she came out a lot more than even my dad who wasn’t there.”

The actor and his sister Kate Hudson, 44, were raised primarily alone by the First Wives Club actress after she split from their biological father Bill in 1980.

Goldie would meet Kurt Russell, his long-time partner, in 1983, when Oliver was seven years old.

After Goldie and Bill’s divorce, there was a prolonged period of tension in the relationship between Bill, Oliver and Kate.

However, according to the actor, the Hoffman Institute course helped Oliver understand both Bill and Goldie.

“The forgiveness and the compassion that you feel for them at the end of this process is incredible because then you realize that they’re just repeating the ship that they went through, you know, with their parents,” he explained in his podcast.

‘My father’s forgiveness was enormous because his father left him in the middle of the night when he was five years old. You know, my dad didn’t do exactly that, but basically he got by, you know, so I can’t always help myself when I’m parenting and thinking, ‘What am I pushing (my kids) on?’

Oliver has been married to his wife Erinn Bartlett since 2006. Together they have sons Wilder, 16, and Bodhi, 13, as well as daughter Rio, 10.

After his divorce from Hawn, Bill had two children – daughter Emily and son Zachary – with Laverne and Shirley stars, and then-wife, Cindy Williams.

In 2006, Bill also welcomed daughter Lalania.

In a 2011 interview with DailyMail.com, Bill berated Goldie for turning Oliver and Kate against him when she started dating Kurt.

“When we broke up, she never said a bad word about me,” Bill told the Ny Breaking. ‘But when Kurt came on the scene, the story changed and I became the big, bad wolf.

“I would say to her, ‘Goldie, why are you putting me in the trash and saying I’m an absent father when that’s just not the case?’ and she laughed and said, “Oh Bill, you know it makes a better story.”

However, over time the situation has improved.

Oliver even acknowledged in 2018 that he had exchanged “some text messages” with his estranged father.

In 2016, Kate spoke about her relationship with her biological father, expressing her forgiveness for his abandonment during her childhood.

“I really recognize whatever those issues are, it’s just something he has to live with, and that must be painful for him. So I forgive him,” she said during an interview The Howard Stern Show.

Despite their past challenges, the Russell-Hawn family, which also includes Goldie and Kurt’s son, Wyatt Russell, remains incredibly close.

Oliver previously praised Goldie and Kurt for being “great people, great grandparents, great parents,” in a 2021 interview with American weekly.
