Girl, 14, ‘shot her mother dead and wounded her stepfather in rampage’ in their Mississippi home before he wrestled the gun away from her

A 14-year-old girl reportedly shot and killed her mother and wounded her stepfather before he wrestled the gun away and she fled.

Heath Smylie, 38, arrives home before 5 p.m. Tuesday to find his wife Ashley Smylie, 40, dead and his stepdaughter Carly Madison Gregg with a gun in his hand.

She allegedly shot him in the shoulder at their home on Ashton Way in Jackson, Mississippi, but he was able to overpower her and grab the gun.

Gregg jumped a fence in the backyard and ran away, but was caught by police about half an hour later after they hunted her down with a helicopter.

Ashley taught math at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter studied, and was named New Teacher of the Year in 2022.

The sister of a student wrote on social media that “everyone loved her.”

Gregg was charged as an adult with the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of Heath Smylie, Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said.

The teen was taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center, but was moved to the adult jail on Wednesday.

Gregg appeared briefly in Rankin County Court before Judge Kent McDaniel on Wednesday morning.

Ashley previously taught at Warren Central High School for five years.

Her body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy by Rankin County Coroner David Ruth to investigate her death.
