Mike Tyson’s trainer Rafael Cordeiro is not concerned about Tyson potentially suffering a brain injury when he returns to the ring to face Jake Paul on July 20.
Cordeiro opted out of Tyson’s first professional fight since 2005 despite a stern warning from doctor Stephen Hughes, who raised the alarm about the potentially fatal consequences for Tyson.
There will be a 31-year age difference between the fighters when they face each other in four months.
Despite Tyson being considered one of the greatest boxers of all time and Paul having fought more celebrities than trained boxers, there are many who are concerned about Tyson’s ability to still perform at a high level.
One of those opponents of Tyson is now Cordeiro, who trains with Tyson in the gym every day.

Paul will be 27 at the time of the fight, with Tyson being his oldest opponent of his career
‘I don’t think we have to worry about that. We are talking about a two-time world champion,” Cordeiro further said ‘The MMA hour’. “The guy hasn’t had 20 fights in two years, he knows how to fight.
“He’s fought the best guys in the world,” Cordeiro continued. “When he steps into the ring, he knows what to do. It’s not anything new for Mike, and this fight is no different. He works hard every day to go in there and knock Jake out from start to finish. He will prove that in July.’
Still, Paul has shown legitimate punching power, which has raised major concerns for Tyson’s health if ‘The Problem Child’ lands a haymaker clean.
“In older people, the brain tends to lose volume,” Hughes said The conversation. ‘This lengthens the bridging veins and makes them more vulnerable to rupture.’
‘Bleeding from these ruptured veins causes a build-up of blood that presses on the brain. This causes confusion, loss of consciousness, neurological disability and, in some cases, death,” Hughes added.
Paul has recently transitioned from celebrity fights against the likes of Nate Robinson and Anderson Silva to trained boxers. His only loss is against a trained boxer in Tommy Fury.
Of Tyson’s 50 career victories, 44 came by knockout. In November 2020, Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr. in an 8-round exhibition that ended in a draw.
Paul was born two months after Tyson’s first loss to Evander Holyfield, which dropped ‘Iron Mike’ to 45-2 at the time.
